The Eberhard Karls University Tübingen (EKUT) one of the oldest German universities, founded in 1477, currently has 5,300 R&D personnel, 27.400 students and with an R&D spend of >260 million Euro/year (2021). The Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Tuebingen are top class institutions for vocational training and research. To foster the reduction of animal studies in the entire state of Baden Wuerttemberg, EKUT has established the BW 3R Center Tübingen, a cross-departmental 3R center for human-relevant microphysiological systems. The research focus lies i) on the development of human microphysiological OoC that integrate complex human tissues into engineered physiological environments featuring vasculature- like perfusion as well as aspects of the immune system, ii) on the application of OoC for pharmaceutical research, toxicological screening, and mechanistic studies, as well as iii) on the development of enabling technologies for OoC that support parallelisation, automation, and ease of use.
