The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) is the largest university in Greece and one of the largest comprehensive multi-faculty universities in SE Europe. The Department of Chemical Engineering at AUTh was established in 1972 and comprises 25 members of academic staff, 16 members of technical staff, 16 post-doctoral fellows, 76 PhD candidates and over 1300 students. Research and teaching activities are housed across 10550 m2 of Departmental facilities. The research activities of the Biochemical Engineering Laboratory (BEL) lie on the interface between Systems Biology, Bioprocess Systems Engineering and Industrial Bioprocessing. The overall aim is the development of integrated experimental and modelling approaches to address modern biomanufacturing challenges. Focus is on the interplay between upstream bioprocessing conditions and cellular metabolism.
